What is the science behind Aurelia Probiotic Skincare?

A.

We have created a specific Science section for in-depth FAQs. Below is just an introduction to the science.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare's products are not only high in anti-oxidants to combat damaging free radicals, they also contain Aurelia's Probiotic technology, repair and peptide complexes. To fully understand how Aurelia Probiotic Skincare technology works the role of cytokines also needs to be understood. Cytokines play a key role in managing inflammation – they are important signalling molecules that communicate to our body to activate or suppress an inflammatory response.

We need our body's natural reactive immune response to occur to generate a level of inflammation within the skin to effectively counteract challenges to the immune system. In today's busy lifestyles we are exposed to many different stresses and often suffer from excessive inflammation. Moderation is required otherwise our skin is in a constant damaging state.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare's Probiotic technology and repair complex works in synergy offering revolutionary next generation technology by helping to control the level of inflammation within our skin. It protects the skin against excessive levels of IL-10 cytokines which are produced in response to stresses such as excessive exposure to UV light. IL-10 suppresses our skin's immune system and this includes the suppression of other cytokines, such as IL-12 which has been shown to be involved in the repair and control of UV-induced DNA damage. By supporting the right balance of these cytokines, Aurelia promotes the natural repair process and helps to counteract the signs of premature ageing.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare's peptide complex works to prevent the visible signs of ageing by acting on cells called fibroblasts. Fibroblasts work to ensure that the turnover of collagen (responsible for skin elasticity), hyaluronic acid (responsible for hydration) and fibronectin (responsible for skin support) work effectively so that they can defend against ageing and maintain the Extracellular Matrix. When we age or become affected by environmental aggressors, degradation synthesis leads to these support functions of the skin working less effectively, causing our skin to age. Our scientific studies prove an increase in collagen synthesis of 140% and a huge tenfold increase in hyaluronic acid resulting in toned, hydrated and glowing skin.

What are the benefits of probiotics?

A.

Probiotics when utilised effectively in skincare can help prevent accelerated skin ageing; Probiotics ferment actives to enhance their bioavailability creating novel compounds to enhance efficacy. Aurelia Probiotic technology has been developed by a leading biotech and uses immune modulatory glycoproteins from bifido bacteria to generate targeted responses in the skin, balancing stress-damaged skin and stabilising the skin’s defence system. AURELIA PROBIOTIC SKINCARE addresses the inflammation caused by stress and environmental aggressors and balances the skin’s defence system. It does this by maintaining balance (homeostasis) within the adaptive immune system ensuring the skin is optimally responsive.

When do I need to switch to an age prevention routine?

A.

This changes from person to person. Normally, women start to see the early signs of skin ageing in their late 20s to early 30s. You might notice some dullness as cell turnover slows and the outer skin layers start to retain dead cells as well as the start of slight wrinkles round the eye area. Into your 30s there is almost certainly some level of environmental damage in the epidermis and those who are sun worshippers and don't use a daily SPF sun cream may even be suffering sun spots.

Collagen and elastin fibres start to work less effectively meaning your skin will not be bouncing back like it used to. Stress can also affect collagen formation.

Keeping your skin hydrated and properly looked after in your 30s will dramatically affect the way you look in your 40s and beyond!

What is the difference between an age prevention skincare routine and a basic routine?

A.

Age prevention skincare routines offer skincare solutions that scientifically challenge the cause of ageing.

At Aurelia Probiotic Skincare we believe, along with a large number of skin experts, that inflammation is the underlying cause of accelerated skin ageing.

You'll find that all anti-ageing skincare products contain antioxidant-rich ingredients to help prevent oxidative stress and free radical damage. This is a great start and will certainly help but at Aurelia Probiotic Skincare we go several steps further. Our formulations are not only rich in BioOrganic antioxidant botanicals, sourced from around the world for their unique properties, we also utilise the power of probiotic technology and peptide and repair complexes.

When should I start using facial oil?

A.

Using overnight facial oil is a fabulous addition to anyone's skincare routine. It can be used as a hydrating overnight treatment 2 to 3 times a week or it can be integrated into a daily routine which is particularly valuable for those with dry skin. Aurelia's Cell Repair Night Oil can be used alone or in conjunction with your other favourite Aurelia Probiotic Skincare products.

Why are serums so effective?

A.

We recommend the addition of a serum to your age prevention skincare routine. Serums should be used daily.

A serum is usually a concentrated cocktail of skincare actives in a lightweight formula that sinks into your skin fast and targets your complexion's specific needs. Aurelia's Revitalise & Glow Serum is packed with probiotic technology and repair and peptide complexes, combined with BioOrganic botanicals and flower essences to hydrate and soothe dull and dehydrated skin promoting a luminous, dewy, radiant glow whilst helping to prevent skin ageing.

It enables accelerated action on the skin's dermis within this easily absorbed potent fluid. Essential oils of Jasmine, Plumeria, Tuberose and Mandarin combine to ensure using Aurelia's Revitalise and Glow Serum is a complete treat and smells amazing.

Use your serum in the morning and evening after cleansing and before you apply your moisturiser or overnight treatment oil. As they are lightweight formulas, serums absorb quickly so always apply lightly and rapidly but with sweeping movements. These sweeping motions will increase blood supply to the upper levels of the skin. Lastly, carry out rapid but light tapping movements gently over the face to further aid circulation.

Don't skip your serum even if time is tight; use the pipette to drop the serum into your moisturiser on the palm of your hand and massage in.

What kind of cleanser should I be using?

A.

A creamy cleanser is a great choice for all skin types. However, no matter what kind of skin you have, all skincare routines should start with a cleanser whether it be oil-based, foaming or a cream cleanser. As we get older, foaming cleansers tend to dry the skin and often contain synthetic foamers. Switching to an oil or cream cleanser would be a good step. Using a muslin to remove your cleanser is a fantastic way to gently remove daily grime and any skin cells that need to be dislodged to help keep your skin radiant.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare's Miracle Cleanser is a creamy cleanser and comes with our antibacterial bamboo muslin.

Why are antibacterial bamboo muslin cloths recommended?

A.

To achieve ultimate daily results we believe that you need to remove your cleanser with more than just warm water. Using one of our antibacterial bamboo muslins enables you to gently lift away daily grime and make up whilst stimulating circulation within the skin. The other benefit is that you gently dislodge dead skin cells from the skin's surface which enables your product to work more effectively.

Why bamboo?

Aurelia has designed bamboo muslins which have added benefits over and above cotton muslins. Made with natural bamboo fibres, the cloths offer superior anti-bacterial properties and are closely woven meaning they are they are much softer than their cotton counterparts.

You can also pop them in the washing machine and they will not become scratchy or stiff!

We recommend changing your muslin after two or three uses. Aurelia Probiotic Skincare's Monday to Sunday bamboo muslins can be purchased here.

A.

All Aurelia Probiotic Skincare's products are suitable for people with sensitive skin and have been dermatologically tested.

If you suffer from sensitive skin or if you are experiencing a period of prolonged sensitivity due to environmental factors, hormonal changes or a reaction to another product, we recommend applying a small test patch.

What skin types are suitable for Aurelia Products?

A.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare is suitable for all skin types.

When using our Cell Repair Night Oil we do advise you to vary the frequency depending on skin type:

  • Normal to combination skin: use as a treatment three times a week
  • Dry skin: use daily
  • Very dry skin: use daily and apply underneath Aurelia's Cell Revitalise Night Moisturiser for even deeper hydration

Can I use Aurelia products during pregnancy?

A.

The entire range is suitable for use during pregnancy with the exception of our Miracle Cleanser as it contains Rosemary essential oil, which is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

Do you use preservatives in your products?

A.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare uses a minimum amount of preservatives in our products to guarantee safety and efficacy. The preservatives we use have been selected for their globally-approved safety record, which comply with EU cosmetic directive standards. Preservatives are always used at minimal levels supported with natural preservatives such as Vitamin E and Benzyl Alcohol. We never use parabens.

Why are preservatives required?

A.

Using a small amount of safe preservative allows you to use the product for up to 12 months when opened.

Products can spoil when they're not preserved properly. We tend not to keep our cosmetics in the fridge and instead often store them in humid bathroom environments. Preservatives are essential in most products (except some balms and oils that are very stable) to prevent damage caused by microorganisms and to avoid contamination.

Please view our strict ingredient policy for information on our ingredients.

How does Aurelia Probiotic Skincare ensure ONLY minimal preservatives are used?

A.

We test all our skincare for safety. This series of tests is often referred to as stability or challenge testing. It involves taking a sample of the product and injecting it with a wide variety of common bugs, such as bacteria, moulds and fungi, and testing for how well the preservative system deals with these. We then cause accelerated ageing to this sample over approximately 6 weeks in a warm environment (around 30 degrees). The aged sample is then re-tested and we look for the same safety levels as we would find in a freshly made sample. We test and re-test, with the preservatives at different levels, and we use the lowest possible volume - not too much and not too little. This ensures we are fully satisfied that the product you receive will be perfect. We never top up products to over-preserve them.

Why do you avoid using parabens?

A.

Many conventional skincare products often use parabens which can in some cases cause allergic reactions to the skin. We decided to never use parabens. Parabens have had a bad press over recent years as they have been reported in some studies to have estrogenic properties. Parabens are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid and are often shown on ingredient labels as methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben. Many studies that set out to test the safety of parabens have been widely debated by experts with both sides putting forward compelling arguments for and against their continued use. Those against parabens are concerned that the increased rate of breast cancer diagnoses could be linked to parabens. This is due to the fact that some scientists believe that parabens have a weak ability to mimic estrogen and therefore have been found in breast cancer tumour biopsies.

There are absolutely no parabens in Aurelia Probiotic Skincare products and we are delighted to have found a more natural alternative, offering our customers peace of mind as well as keeping our products in perfect condition.

How do you fragrance your products?

A.

We only use 100% natural blends of essential oils, uniquely created with the finest oils. No synthetic perfumes are used in Aurelia Probiotic Skincare products. The term 'parfum' is often used to hide synthetic fragrances and other artificial ingredients.

Are Aurelia products suitable for vegetarians?

A.

All Aurelia Probiotic Skincare products are suitable for vegetarians.

Are your products non-comedogenic (non-pore blocking)?

A.

Yes. Our products have been designed to prevent clogging or irritation. We use 100% natural BioOrganic botanical oils. We completely avoid heavy or clogging oils like mineral oils or silicones. Silicones are synthetically-derived chemicals that are occlusive so they suffocate the skin and trap actives, preventing them from being absorbed into the skin. Silicones make products feel very smooth and slippery and are often used in primers even though they are not good for your skin. They are used in the majority of moisturisers and serums on the market (look for 'dimethicone' or 'methicone' in ingredients lists).

Do you test your products on animals?

A.

No. We are a 'Cruelty Free International certified' company that supports the end to animal testing for cosmetics. The leaping bunny mark is placed on our labels and outer boxes, offering peace of mind for all our customers. This stipulates that no animal testing is conducted or commissioned for finished cosmetic products or ingredients by the company, its laboratories or its suppliers after a fixed cut-off date. This required total transparency by Aurelia Probiotic Skincare enabling Cruelty-Free international to independently audit us throughout our supply chains to ensure that we adhere to its animal testing policy and the Standard's strict criteria.

Is your packaging recyclable?

A.

All of our packaging is recyclable. You will find the relevant recycling codes printed on our labels and boxes.

Why do you use amber glass?

A.

Aurelia Probiotic Skincare is a big fan of 100% recyclable amber glass to keep our technologies and 'BioOrganic' ingredients protected from sunlight and in the perfect condition for you to use. Sunlight increases the deterioration of essential oils and carrier oils through oxidisation so by using amber glass we are helping to protect the products.
