HOW TO SET GOALS FOR 2021 & STICK TO THEM

After the rollercoaster that was 2020, it might feel premature to start thinking about the future when things are still uncertain just now. But, setting goals is an important way to stay focused and positive – especially when you’re not feeling so optimistic about things. Unsure where to start? Check out some of the tips we have for you on setting goals and taking the first steps towards achieving them.

Work out what you want

Easier said than done for sure. But taking some down-time to reflect on your happiness and where you’d like your future to go is the first step in working out what you want to do in 2021. Once you have a clearer idea of what that looks like for you, then start writing what it is that you want out of life. Ask yourself what will make you feel like your best self.

Dream big… ish

A good goal pushes you out of where you are, but isn’t so far removed that you can’t even figure out how you’ll ever do it. If you’ve ever worked in marketing, you might have heard of this being referred to as a SMART objective (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-related). If something you want feels like a stretch but one that’s not completely out of reach, you’re more likely to take action to make it happen.

Break it down

One top tip we learned from a triathlete is to have one main aim for the overall year and gear every decision you make around it. To ask whether it will push you closer to it, or further away. But as with any big aspiration or project, breaking it down into smaller tasks will help you feel less overwhelmed and more confident that you’ve got this. So take that overall ambition and break down the smaller actions you’d need to do. Think of it like a ladder, you can’t just jump to the top. There’s a series of steps you have to take to get there.

Manifest your destiny

For the more spiritual of us out there, meditating or trying to visualise what we want can be a powerful tool for seeing ourselves where we’d like to be one day. Or, try scripting where you write a letter from your future self thanking the universe for giving you all the things that you wanted. It’s not for everyone but it can be a fun exercise to help you hone in on the feeling of making your dreams come true.

Don’t be restrictive

We all know resolutions often fail at the first hurdle, often because they’re too black and white. How many of us have said ‘I’m giving up chocolate’ only to dive into the selection box later that night. Telling yourself you’re not allowed something, or you’re not going to do something, will only have the opposite effect. If you want to make healthier lifestyle choices for example, try adding more nutritious foods into your diet rather than depriving yourself of anything.

Celebrate every small victory

Lots of us achieve mini goals every day and don’t even register the success before moving onto the next thing. Taking time to congratulate yourself for the little wins will spur you on to achieve even better ones in the long run. Plus, you deserve it either way!

ACCEPT THE UNEXPECTED

Living in unpredictable times means that goals are nice to achieve, but you shouldn’t beat yourself up if you don’t do everything you set out to. Or just not in the time you thought you would. Financial goals are especially challenging just now for many of us. Remember that setting out to achieve something is the most important part of the journey. Just because it hasn’t happened by the end of the year doesn’t mean it won’t. The world is a different place now and we’re all trying to navigate it together. Remember you’re not alone in your reality changing and your worth is not defined by your productivity.
